Leader Board
It's been FIVE weeks since the Covid Cross-Country Conservation Challenge began! Here's where we stand:
Team with the most miles: Bewick Lab (220 miles)
Team with the most money raised for conservation: Bewick Lab ($43)
Individual with the most miles: Han Solo (65 miles)
Individual with the most money raised for conservation: Dr. Bewick
It's never too late to join in the fun! But the longer you wait, the less likely you are to capitalize on all of your lab-mate's New Year's Resolutions! So form a team and get running! Next week, we'll start posting overall mileage and money raised on our leader board! If you've been running, but haven't signed up and haven't been logging your miles, feel free to record your total mileage since January 1, 2021 as single entry when you start! Then log daily (or weekly if you prefer) and we'll update the leaderboard accordingly!

Covid Cross-Country Conservation Challenge
Are you sad that you didn't get to do fieldwork last summer? Are you worried that you've packed on a literal COVID '19' and won't be as nimble getting to your field sites when the pandemic is over? Are you losing your mind cooped up inside your apartment? Maybe you just really like lab rivalry? ...or raising money for a good cause? Whatever your motivation, you've come to the right place! It doesn't matter whether you have a team of fifty or a team of one... it doesn't matter whether you average one mile a week or one hundred miles a week! Join us as we get outside, train for (fingers crossed!) doing fieldwork this summer, and partake in a bit of friendly inter-lab competition... all while raising money for conservation! What could be better? And seriously, what else are you going to do this semester? After all, we've probably got a solid four more months of social distancing ahead of us. #crosscountryconservationchallenge, #trainforfieldworkduringapandemic, #labspirit, #mentalhealth, #physicalhealth, #runforacause, #runsixfeetapart |

How It Works
1. Gather your lab together (virtually, of course!) and pick a team name. Register your team on our tracking site. Then make sure that everyone in your lab uses your team name when entering miles!
2. Ask friends and family to pledge to donate to the Nature Conservancy for every mile that you run*. At the end of the challenge, collect donations and make a contribution (alternately, friends and family can make donations directly or your lab-PI can orchestrate a single lab donation). Whatever you choose to do, make sure to keep your personal total pledge per mile up to date in our tracking system, so that we can maintain our leaderboard!
3. Estimate the mileage of your runs using any method that you'd like. Do you have a fancy watch? Do you like to carry a phone? Try an app like Strava. Do you prefer to run with nothing but the shirt on your back (or shirtless, even)? Determine your mileage after you return from your run using a website like plotaroute. We're doing this based on the honor policy. Don't cheat.
4. Enter your miles into our tracking system every day between January 1, 2021 and April 30th, 2021 (Please don't make more than one entry per hour or your separate entries will not be counted!) We'll update our leaderboard weekly (by Friday at midnight) so that you can see how your team compares. On May 1, 2021, we'll announce the winning team. Please only count running! Not walking. Not hiking.
5. Good luck! Have fun... and remember... if you're going to run together, run six feet apart!
*PI's, I would encourage you to start all of your team members at some small donation (e.g., 5-10 cents per mile).
